- The Tuscania was a troopship carrying American troops to Europe when it was torpedoed Feb. 5, 1918 in the North Channel (UK). Russell was one of the survivors of that tragedy. He was at that time Corporal Russell James Brunette of the 6th Battalion, 20th Engineers, Co. E (Forestry).
